A Private Collector’s Dream. The Allure of Rare Native American Jewelry

Ellis Taner has collected Native American jewelry and art his entire life. Each piece and artist he’s collected stands as a testament to the intricate artistry and rich cultural pride of the Indigenous communities in the Gallup area, and the whole world. Each item in his private collection serves not merely as an adornment but as a vibrant narrative, intertwining history, spirituality, and craftsmanship. From the detail of handcrafted silver work to the incorporation of natural gemstones, these treasures encapsulate philosophical and aesthetic dimensions unique to Native American traditions.

The rarity of materials, such as turquoise, coral, and various precious metals, enhances the museum-worthy status of these pieces. Turquoise, often revered among the Navajo (Diné) as a protective stone and a symbol of prosperity, is meticulously cut and polished, showcasing the artisan’s skill and deep connection to the earth. Each gemstone, selected for its vibrancy and symbolism, transforms a simple design into a profound statement of identity and belonging.

Moreover, techniques passed down through generations—such as intricate beadwork, elaborate inlays, and the use of traditional motifs—emphasize the significance of storytelling in Native American culture. Many pieces reflect the beliefs imbued within them, often depicting natural elements, spiritual symbols, or animal motifs that convey deeper meanings and connections to the cosmos.

In a gallery setting, these jewelry pieces command attention, inviting viewers to appreciate not only their aesthetic beauty but also their cultural narratives. The harmony of design, material, and symbolism creates an experience that transcends mere adornment, prompting reflection on the stories woven into each item.

As you view Ellis Tanner’s private gallery, it becomes clear that these exquisite items deserve to be celebrated. You’ll see why Ellis Tanner has treasured these pieces and artist for decades, and why he seeks for the next person to respect and admire the history and artistry attached to each piece or jewelry and art.
